I found my first 4 leaf clover in 1st grade playing in the school yard. I remember the exact moment it caught my eye as I was tightrope walking along a concrete barrier separating the schoolyard from the sidewalk. It was the most magical thing I'd ever seen.
I continued to hunt in this little patch for years and would come home with fistfuls of 4-leaf clovers. Soon, I would see 4-leaf clovers everywhere I went. For years I would fill every thick book in my house with pressed clovers, until I got the 10th birthday present every little girl dreams of, a laminator.
As the clovers continued to fill books and drawers, my mom suggested I walk down to the local jewellery studio and ask if they'd like to buy some clovers to make into jewellery. So, at 12 years old, I sold 24 laminated 4 leaf clovers at $10 each to the incredible owner of Made You Look Jewellery who gifted them to each of her artists. This was an exuberant amount of money to a 12 year old and I cannot thank her enough for supporting the entreprenurial endeavor of a young child because it was a key factor in what The4LeafCloverStore is today.
I didn't sell any clovers again until I turned 18 in 2020, when, during COVID, clover hunting became a true escape. The piling up clovers, and remembering my successful clover sale 6 years earlier, inspired me to finally open an Etsy store where I could sell my clovers and hopefully share the magic and joy that they bring me, with others.
Over the next 6 years I would reach over 1000 sales on Etsy, sell at various markets and festivals, making incredible friends along the way. I had even been recognized while I was out hunting as "the girl that sells clovers".
I am so thankful for my little business and the places it has taken me. People always ask me if the clovers are truly lucky, and while I can't promise anything, I can say that they have truly made me feel like one of the luckiest people on earth.

White clover
Trifolium repens, also known as white clover, is the most widely grown clover and is considered "true clover" when discussing 4-leaf clovers. The plant is aptly named, as trifolium means 3 leaves, and repens means "creeping" or "crawling", describing the 3-leafed, vine-like growth of the plant, which is actually part of the pea family (Fabaceae). They are known as white clover for the white flowers they produce throughout the summer. Most people don't realize that clover grows along creeping stems called stolons, rather than as individual plants sprouting from the ground.1
White clover is native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia, and is now common across North and South America, Australia and New Zealand.1 It is also an excellent nitrogen fixer: bacteria living in its roots pull nitrogen from the air and fertilize the soil, making it a useful companion plant in pastures and crops.2
A four-leaf clover isn't a different plant or a different species. It's the exact same Trifolium repens, where one leaf has grown an extra fourth leaflet. White clover's genetics are unusually complicated: it carries two full sets of chromosomes inherited from two different ancestor species (it's an allotetraploid), so traits don't follow simple inheritance patterns.3 Researchers at the University of Georgia mapped the extra-leaflet ("multifoliolate") trait and found it is controlled by two recessive genes, which is why it shows up so rarely.4 Growing conditions likely play a role too, so a plant carrying the genes won't necessarily produce a 4-leaf clover every season.
Because clover spreads clonally along its creeping stems, one patch may all be the same genetic plant.5 So, if you spot a 4-leaf clover, keep looking nearby to see if you can find any others.
The number you've probably heard is "1 in 10,000" for the rarity of a clover. A 2017 survey that counted roughly 5.7 million white clovers across six European countries put the real average closer to 1 in 5,076.6 Still, definitely a rarity. This is the number behind every clover I find, and every clover in my shop. Having scoured lawns, fields and wherever else grass grows, I can say that I've probably looked at millions of individual clovers in my lifetime to find the number of 4 leaf clovers I have.
Five-leaf clovers and beyond come from the same trait, and each extra leaflet makes them much rarer: the same 2017 survey estimated about 1 in 24,000 for five leaves and 1 in 312,000 for six.6 Here's the world record for leaves on a clover compared to my personal record!
The Guinness World Record for most leaves on a clover belongs to Yoshiharu Watanabe of Nasushiobara, Japan, who spent years cross-pollinating clover in his garden and found a 63-leaf stem in 2023.7
My own personal record is a 10 leaf clover I found while I was walking along Lake Ontario. Interestingly, I've found three 8-leaf clovers, and a few 7s and 6s, but skipped 9 leaves.
A lot of what gets marketed online as a "real four-leaf clover" is absolutely not Trifolium repens. It's usually Marsilea quadrifolia or Marsilea polycarpa. This is an aquatic fern, not a clover, that grows near ponds and streams and naturally produces four wedge-shaped leaflets on every single leaf, every time.910 Because it's always four-leafed, it's cheap and easy to grow and sell.

Yes! Every clover is genuine Trifolium repens, found growing wild in Ontario, then pressed and laminated to preserve it.
Check the leaf shape, uniformity and size. A genuine four-leaf clover has rounded leaflets, often with a pale V-mark, and the fourth leaflet is usually a bit smaller than the other three. If every leaflet is identical, wedge-shaped, and has no white V-mark, it's very likely Marsilea, the water fern, not a clover at all.
Once I pick a clover, I press it in tissue in a book to flatten and dry it out, preserving its shape and preventing rotting. Then, I either laminate it or use it in a jewellery item or trinket.
Sometimes, a 4 leaf clover meets the wrong end of a lawnmower, or becomes a snack for a passing insect. When a clover looks less than perfect, I list it at a discounted price, but they are still the same magical little plants.
